  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To study functions of HIV-1 Gag proteins, various in-frame
  10.        gag gene mutants were constructed and their replication properties were
  11.        examined. METHODS: Growth kinetics of mutant viruses in several cell
  12.        lines were determined by RT assays. Defective steps of the mutants in
  13.        the viral life cycle were monitored by single-round replication assays.
  14.        RESULTS: Some of the mutant viruses replicated fairly well in some
  15.        specific cell lines. In cell lines which did not support replication of
  16.        the mutants, the defects of the viruses were localized to early
  17.        infection phase in addition to late phase. CONCLUSIONS: Our results
  18.        indicate that HIV-1 Gag proteins play an important functional role,
  19.        through the interaction with a cell factor(s), at an early replication
  20.        phase. Determination of the precise defective step of the mutant viruses
  21.        is now in progress.
